File this one under sibling rivalry. Last November Grub Street reported that the two brothers behind the two Cafe Regulars in Park Slope left the business last November due to conflict with their sister Anne. Now it looks like they’re going into business for themselves. According to a thread on Brooklynian, one of the brothers, Martin O’Connell, just put signage up for his own coffee shop. Appropriately named Cafe Martin, it is, at 5th and 5th, only about five blocks away from the original Cafe Regular. Apparently he wanted to open his own place to counter Anne’s attempt to make Cafe Regular “like Starbucks.” It looks like we can add sibling wars to the previous coffee wars we’ve seen recently in Park Slope. GMAP
babs is right – there is more than enough distance between this place and Cafe Regular that they should both be fine.
Great to have Martin back in the neighborhood! I’ve been going to Cafe 474 on 4th Ave since the dust up and soon expect to split my coffee budget between Martin and 474.
5th and 5th really isn’t too close to Cafe Regular – this is a great alternative for the center Slope.
Martin was cool, and glad hes opening this up. Oddly I ran into him and another former worker at Regular, in the middle of Montana’s Glacier National Park.
This is great news. He was the best barista at Cafe’ Regular and now I finally can get a decent cappucino again.

so much dra-ma in the coffee world!!
you can hate on starbucks all you want tho, but i will give them credit for one thing.. their staff is almost always extremely friendly and polite, no attitude. oh yeah, and they are a godsend for providing the city open access public bathrooms.
*rob*
Martin was the best thing about the old cafe regular. This is great.
