FULTON-MALL-STREETSCAPE-0309.jpg
fulton-reconstruction-map-0309.jpgThe Downtown Brooklyn Partnership is gearing up for a $15 million renovation of the Fulton Mall. According to an article by Stephen Witt in the print edition of yesterday’s Courier Life, the renovation will take two years and be performed in two phases. Phase 1 will create new public space (to be called Albee Square Plaza) in front of the entrance to the old Albee Square Mall; as part of this project, Dekalb Avenue will be closed from Bond Street to Albee Square West. The Partnership envisions this space being used for anything from performances to outdoor markets. Phase 2, which won’t start until next year, will address outdoor infrastructure like sidewalks and street furniture throughout the rest of the Fulton Mall. “The new streetscape will bring everything down to a more personal and individual level so instead of seeing a giant ugly bus shelter you will see trees, benches, plantings and the stores,” DBP’s Michael Burke told The Courier. Existing retail tenants and landlords, who have been consulted though the design process, are looking forward to the upgrades: “When we saw the plans for this we were absolutely thrilled,” said Macy’s SVP Ed Goldberg. “It will make the whole streetscape much more modern and conducive to shopping and safer.”

  1. bxgrl…I think you’re right about the makeup of the picture. it is truly not representative and its an affront to think it needs to be upgraded so that it will fill up with “more” white people.

What, on the other hand, is calling the comments racist which were not. The fact that some of the posts called attention to the situation you described points out the fact that others saw it too. Whether they commented in a manner like you did or a more snarky comment is a different story.

  2. I shopped in Fulton Mall for years- before it even became a “mall”. There were very few white people and in all honesty it didn’t make a hell of a differnece. I found great stuff, people were always nice, it was convenient. But as far as Bklyn Heights, CH and CG- they didn’t shop there.

So my annoyance- especially with the picture- is the idea the Fulton St. is a place that has to be upgraded to be “saved” from itself, and to being in the white people because it isn’t good enough now for them. That whole picture is code – 2 Black people and a third from the back- the rest all white. And all they show that looks different is a bench, a new bus stop, new lamps and more trees. (They re-use the young Black woman’s image in the second rendering on the web site. The only Black person in that one).

Maybe I’m overly sensitive to it, but that picture is worth a thousand not so nice words. It would be nice to have Fulton St. improved with all those new lights and bus stops and trees- but it should be done because of the people who shop there now and who have already made Fulton St. a commercial success.
