A reader noticed Cobble Hill’s popular French Bistro Bar Tabac has been shuttered for operating without a license. There was a sign up on the gate yesterday confirming this from the Department of Consumer Affairs, and another sign up by Bar Tabac that read, “We will be closed for terrace renovations from Monday August 21st to Wednesday August 23rd.” Our guess is the license issues have something to do with its sidewalk cafe. 1. Never been able to understand the crowds at this place and the other similarly nothing special place further down Smith Street when the much better Sue Perette is usually mostly empty

  2. Well, for starters its one block east of where Boerum Place terminates.

I’ve seen a lot of superior nabe creep (the Heights below Atlantic is a fav), but I’ve never seen anyone try to claim Smith is Cobble.

  3. Nyguy:

There is no consensus regarding the border between Boerum and Cobble Hill. I’ve seen multiple borders that zig-zag. Some places use Smith, some use Court, and some use both–e.g. Smith between Atlantic and Wyckoff, then Court.

  4. That would be crazy if they have been operating as a sidewalk cafe without a license for all these years. I mean I have been eating there on the sidewalk for 10 years. Love that place. Wonder what the story is…
