A reader noticed Cobble Hill’s popular French Bistro Bar Tabac has been shuttered for operating without a license. There was a sign up on the gate yesterday confirming this from the Department of Consumer Affairs, and another sign up by Bar Tabac that read, “We will be closed for terrace renovations from Monday August 21st to Wednesday August 23rd.” Our guess is the license issues have something to do with its sidewalk cafe. 1. My experience was the same as Pete’s, not once, not twice, three times I couldn’t even get someone to take my order. You can imagine my crocodile tears upon learning it has closed.

Bar Tabac did have a sidewalk cafe license, but it was frequently in violation (e.g.: too many tables, tables in the wrong location).

  2. As long as you don’t use the term BoCoCa.

I don’t mind lumping Smith into Cobble Hill/Carroll Gardens; my reasoning is F at Bergen serves CH and F at Carroll serves CG (roughly speaking) and since the entrances are on Smith the blurring into CH/CG is understandable. Atlantic is the easy demarcation between BH/CH, and I say that as someone hanging on to BH by mere feet.

I’ve always had a soft spot for Bar Tabac. I’ve always had pretty good meals there. It’s always a lively place to stop in for a glass of wine, and maybe a bit of weeknight music. Plus: petanque tournament every summer!

  3. Smith Street is zip code 11201 (downtown, Cobble Hill, Bklyn Heights) until you hit Kane/Butler. People have been arguing about this stuff for years.

We finally had enough of the ambiguity–we lived on the border for 7 years–so we moved to . . . the border between Crown Heights and Prospect Heights.
