Bar Tabac Closed (For Now At Least)

A reader noticed Cobble Hill’s popular French Bistro Bar Tabac has been shuttered for operating without a license. There was a sign up on the gate yesterday confirming this from the Department of Consumer Affairs, and another sign up by Bar Tabac that read, “We will be closed for terrace renovations from Monday August 21st to Wednesday August 23rd.” Our guess is the license issues have something to do with its sidewalk cafe. I’m not sad to see this place go. My one and only meal there was the worst dining (food and service) experience I’ve ever had. THE WORST! see ya!
I’ve been here half a dozen times without a problem. Service might be slow if BT’s extremely busy–they offer Sat & Sun brunch all day–but otherwise it’s not a big deal. Their burgers are awesome (with toasted onion rolls) as are the fries. And I think the prices are fair.
someone must have it in for them. Is it pete?
Normally it takes a complaint to get a visit from an inspector….

Subject: RE: [boerumhill] Bar Tabac closure?
The Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) informed me that Bar Tabac recently pled guilty to its third violation in the last two years. Among other charges, the restaurant failed to keep a pedestrian path adjacent to their sidewalk cafe for pedestrian safety. By mutual consent, DCA suspended Bar Tabac?s license for three days, from August 23rd to August 25th.
so could change that sentence to “nice in the summer with some vino and wines to while away the afternoons”?
and what happens when sun sets? hit the hard stuff?
Pete – to clarify I consider wine to be my friend yes.
this is disappointing. i often work late in manhattan and this place was reliably open and delicious late (compared to most other smith street spots), so i could pretend i work normal hours. i was so upset i actually called 311 and
asked what was wrong.
it looks like they did not have a sidewalk license. so, i think they may be back once thursday rolls around.. sans sidewalk tables. at least i hope so.
“Nice in the summer with some vino and friends to while away the afternoons. ” —sounds like another wino.
This place is very solid. Nice in the summer with some vino and friends to while away the afternoons. Hopefully only temporary closure.
As a total aside we went to Applewoods in PS last week. $45 for 3 course tasting menu was a great deal. Food and service fantastic.
remember this is only step from Ratifico.
