Lewis Avenue mainstay Bread Stuy has shuttered, months after Brownstone Books also said goodbye to the avenue. According to this Bed Stuy Patch article, the store was closed by order of the Commissioner of Health and Mental Hygiene for operating without a permit. Shop owner Lloyd Porter has no plans to fight against the city. The coffee and pastry spot has been in the neighborhood for seven years. I think it is a staple in the community,” one regular told Patch. “There’s no other place to get good coffee and hang out.”

  1. I don’t know about an implied monopoly- unless you’re talking about baked goods but dibs would have a better handle on what’s in the immediate neighborhood. But i think his problems were more due to his business practices, than lack of demand.

  2. How does a business owner manage to run a business for 7 years without a valid permit?
Something’s lacking with respect to city inspections as well as the owner’s business acumen.

  3. Sorry to see them close. I hope it’s not a trend on lewis, that’s the second business that closed recently on that block. Hats off to the owners, they really did have a positive influence on lewis!

  4. those Tiny Cup people should open up in there. i went there a month or so ago for the first time and their coffee was damn good – and there’s probably no crossover of customers since they’re all the way on Nostrand near the G.

  5. Sorry to see them go. They helped revitalize Lewis Ave. I don’t know the whys and wherefores of what happened, but I wish the owners the best, and also hope someone else steps in and makes a go of it. They’ll do well.
