Looks like somebody’s got yet another plan for the space on the corner of Smith and Pacific. The short-lived Bueno, along with the old outdoor Trout space behind it, was boarded up again a couple of weeks ago. In recent history, this restaurant space has been home to Since 1963, Trout, and Gravy. The corner gets plenty of foot traffic and next door neighbor Pacifico has managed to stay open for a while now, but nothing seems to be working out here. Anyone know what’s going on in there?

  1. The problem with this space is that it’s still controlled by the same person who brought the previous restaurants and is responsible for Pacifico. The current owner or leaseholder was partners with Alan Mamary at one point, I believe, but Mamary never had much interest in actually running these various failed restaurants. The current leaseholder continues to try new ideas for the space, believing that he’ll oneday hit paydirt, despite the fact that he doesn’t know how to run a restaurant. I think the reason he suffers from this illusion is that Pacifico continues to do business despite a mediocre product and a severe rat problem. He is right about one thing, though. It’s a great location and physical space (if the rat issue can be curbed). I look forward to the space changing hands completely to a different owner, who might be able to bring a viable business there.

  2. every restaurant in nyc has rats and cockroaches whether you want to believe so or not it doesnt change that fact. obviously some restaurants are better at hiding it, but always remember, Willard is using that burrito as a rag doll.

  3. Ratifico is still open? Really? Guess I know where we’re taking Snappy this weekend. Weather should be perfect for drinking pitchers of margaritas outdoors, just us and rats the size of raccoons.
