Bija Kids Yoga is opening a studio near the corner of Fulton and Washington in Clinton Hill at the beginning of April. This will be the first full-time studio in Brooklyn devoted to children’s yoga. Bija will also hold children’s classes like music and art and will host a summer camp and birthday parties. The grand opening party is planned for April 15th. GMAP

  1. All you folks mocking kids yoga, you need to sit still and breathe for a bit. Maybe even some alternate nostril breathing for some balance. Yes it sounds funny, but Bija is great. Think about it: you bend your body into animal shapes, stand on your head, and chant funny-sounding words (actually, not even sure bija does any chanting). That’s certainly appealing for some kids. My kid did a week of bija summer camp years ago (this is not bija’s forst location, btw) and had a great time.

  2. One of my nursery-school age nieces already has some of the same balance issues that led me to yoga in the first place, so I taught her some poses while I was babysitting. Now both nieces come after me for more “yoga tricks” when I visit. It’s just another way to be active for them.

  3. The way kiddie yoga is taught at my daughter’s school is really fun. And they don’t try to enforce any of the quietness. Its just a fun, organized , body moving class that my daughter really likes. Don’t know anything about the vibe of this particular studio but the notion that yoga is not something a kid would want to do or is imposed by parents is silly.

  4. i get it – kids yoga sounds like a yuppie nightmare- but bija is far from it.

My child goes to afterschool at Bija, and will go to the summer camp. It’s a kid’s program that works incredibly hard to be respectful of kids needs- while at the same time it is far from indulgent of bad behavior. I can’t emphasize enough how much i like the program and the staff.

in the afterschool program they go to the park and run their butts off- They get a snack and make art- a couple of days a week they do kids yoga- which is active – and they love it. They also do dance and lots of other activities.

As you can guess, I think it’s a great program, they’re great people, and I’m excited to see it expanding.

  5. This makes me believe in organized sports even more. I guess you need to be 7 or so for little league and city swimming competitions also start in grammar school and basketball, etc. Come on. Kids need to get out and play with one another. Get away from the damn computer (am I typing this on a sunny Saturday?) and do something athletic.

  6. My pre-K son does ‘yoga’ once a week at school. From what I can tell it’s closer to tumbling. He seems to like it though; he is always writhing around on the floor and claiming it’s ‘yoga’.
I’d be happy with this joint if they had some sort of ‘playspace’ akin to a playground where the kidlets could let off some steam in the frigid winter months. As much as I loathe those places and spend my entire time there ruminating on just how monotonous and devoid of texture my life has become since I became a parent, I’m thankful for their existence. Without them the tot would’ve torn the house apart by now.

  7. Very funny jessi. Funny about the baptism. I never remember sleeping on the floor but the running part was what we did. And agree DeLepp.

That will be another empty Fulton space in a year.
