It might surprise you to learn that heart disease is the leading cause of death among women in the United States. Approximately one of every four females, of all ages and backgrounds, will die from it.

That’s the motivating factor for the Women’s Heart to Heart Health Symposium, a free dinner lecture sponsored by Maimonides Heart & Vascular Institute. The program includes free heart screenings.

This lecture will feature three expert speakers in the field of cardiology: Inna Nelipovich, MD, director of the Women’s Heart Program at Maimonides Medical Center; Millicent Comrie, MD, director of the Brooklyn Heights Women’s Center at Maimonides Medical Center; and Louisa DiGerolamo, NP, clinical manager of Vascular & Endovascular Surgery at Maimonides Medical Center.

The trio will discuss, among other things, the genetic components of heart disease, and how it affects women differently than men — women’s blood vessels are smaller, increasing the likelihood of plaque buildup resulting in blockages. They’ll also offer tips on healthy eating.

They’ll also talk about how Maimonides is no longer Brooklyn’s best-kept secret as it ranks among the top 1 percent in the nation for heart attack and heart failure mortality rates, and is the only hospital in New York State with significantly low mortality rates in all three angioplasty categories. Its cardiac surgeons have lower mortality rates than any Manhattan program.

The lecture and dinner will take place Thursday, September 7 at 7 p.m. at the Park Slope Jewish Center, at 1320 8th Avenue.

The free heart screenings — which include carotid artery, thyroid, body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, and peripheral vascular disease — begin at 6 p.m.
