Here’s an unusual rental — in part because of the location. It’s at 69 Gold Street in Vinegar Hill, where rental apartments aren’t easy to come by.

The space is offbeat as well. It’s housed in the garage behind a Greek Revival house in the Vinegar Hill Historic District, an adjunct that was added in 1921.

And it’s distinctive in its appearance, with a motley mix of finishes — wide plank floors, checkered linoleum, wallpaper, exposed brick that hasn’t been entirely stripped.

It’s a duplex, with a subterranean bottom floor that’s not legal for bedroom use, though it could be put to some other purpose. It’s not an unattractive space as basements go, with exposed brick and ceiling beams, though the concrete floor is a little cold, both figuratively and in the winter probably literally.

Upstairs is a large living space with an open kitchen, and a narrow bedroom, just over seven feet wide — the only windows in the bedroom face out to the living space.

The kitchen’s low on cabinet space, but it’s got high-end appliances — a SubZero fridge and a Viking range — along with a farmhouse sink, a butcher block counter, a wall of white subway tile and a window. The bathroom’s got a wall of exposed brick and sports a small clawfoot tub.

So, it’s a quirky space that not everyone is gonna love, but it will speak to some. The rent is $3,950 a month for the unit, which is listed by Compass broker Michael Hearn. What do you think of the place, and the price tag?
