House of the Day: 169 Adelphi Street

Now that we’re past Labor Day, there are lots of new listings for townhouses in Brooklyn, but not many are choice. This is one of the better ones: This mid-19th century Italianate brownstone has undergone a high-end renovation that left most of the parlor floor details intact but added modern kitchens and bathrooms and walls of mullioned glass with red metal frames in the rear of the house. The upper floors have lost their details, but a buyer who appreciates modern may not care.

The entrance is charming, and the exposed brick and down lights are tastefully restrained, though we do think it’s too bad the original floors didn’t survive. In a Brownstoner article about its sale in 2006, we noted that it was an “architecturally significant building containing much original detail.” Back then, it was a three-family; as far as we can tell, it’s now configured as one. The listing doesn’t specify, and there is no floor plan. Do you think they’ll get their ask of $3,650,000?
