Windsor Terrace Row House With Wood Floors, Four Mantels Asks $2.195 Million

The tidy brick house appears well kept with plenty of original details plus modern updates.

Going by the handful of listing photos, this Windsor Terrace row house appears to have been well cared for over the decades, with gleaming wood floors and attractive stone mantels. At 139 Windsor Place, it is also just a short stroll from Prospect Park.

The house sits within the proposed, but not listed, Windsor Terrace National Register Historic District. The proposed district encompasses several blocks of late 19th and early 20th century dwellings, constructed during a housing boom in the area.

This 19-foot-wide red brick row house dates to the earlier period; it went up in the 1890s along with its matching neighbors. They have low stoops, brownstone lintels, and bracketed cornices. The historic tax photo shows No. 139 with its original double doors still in place. Those have since been replaced by a bright blue door, but the other exterior details are in evidence.

The house hasn’t changed hands in decades and while a legal two-family it is set up as a single family. The parlor level has living, dining, kitchen, and a powder room. Upstairs are two large and two small bedrooms and the one full bath in the house. Laundry is in the basement.

While the house is modest compared to brownstones in north Slope, it has high ceilings and many attractive original features such as moldings. Walls and trim are painted white throughout most of the house, with the exception of the original carved wood newel post in the entry.

Another standout detail are the well-preserved 1890s faux-painted stone mantels. The one in the parlor has its original insert while the one in the dining room has a modern tile surround.

Adjacent to the dining room is the kitchen, which has a splash of color with blue walls and ceiling. There isn’t much counter space and no dishwasher, but some design tweaks could address those issues. A door leads out to a rear deck.

Only the large street-facing bedroom is shown. It has another mantel with original insert, built-in bookshelves on either side, crown molding, and a wood floor. Neither the powder room nor the full bath are pictured so updates may be needed.

The fenced-in rear yard is shown and has potential for an imaginative gardener — right now the space is mostly lawn.
