Greenpoint Hospital Development Plans Put on Hold

Plans to convert the Greenpoint Hospital into 240 affordable apartment units have stalled, reports the Brooklyn Paper. The Great American Construction Corp, the private developer chosen to convert the vacant medical building, pulled out of the project after a senior executive at the company was indicted on bribery charges involving the Department of Housing Preservation and Development on a different job. These developers were picked over the nonprofit group Greenpoint Renaissance Enterprise Corporation, who actually filed a lawsuit after they were passed over for the private developer. (Greenpoint Renaissance has developed several small buildings on the hospital site already.) Instead of turning over the development of the main building to them, the city will restart the bidding process. Locals just want this site, empty since 1982, developed already. “It’s ridiculous — at the very least, they should pick one of the other two groups that applied,” CB1 board member Ryan Kuonen told the Brooklyn Paper.
