This is the second installment spotlighting all of the two dozen buildings in the proposed Skyscraper District in Downtown Brooklyn. Above is 184 to 198 Remsen and 187 to 245 Joralemon. (You can see the map of the entire district here.) This group includes two already landmarked buildings: Brooklyn Borough Hall and 186 Remsen, which was landmarked due to a concern by LPC that the building would be demolished before the area was designated. It also includes 191 Joralemon, the beautiful office tower recently purchased by Catholic Charities for $12,350,000 and the Temple Bar Building at the corner of Court and Joralemon, erected in 1901 with the intent to attract the city’s leading lawyers to the borough. The final vote on the district is September 13th.

  1. It is long overdue. The finest commercial buildings in Manhattan were designated years ago. If the historic district is approved it will be too late for the original Brooklyn Gas building of 1853, which was razed eight or so years ago by St Francis College. It stood next to 186 remsen pictured above.
MM, if you come across a picture of it, you should post it.
The AIA Guide described it as a “miraculous survivor” and it was, until it wasn’t.
