If you are looking for a modestly picturesque exterior, one of these 19th century cottages may catch your eye.

In addition to curb appeal, all of the houses have some surviving historic detail on the interior but have been renovated. Our three picks all date to the 19th century and are located outside New York City in Westchester, Columbia and Rockland counties. They range in price from $525,000 to $2.95 million.

Which would you choose?

house exterior

First up is the most expensive of the three and arguably the least modest. Known as the Gingerbread Cottage, the house at 1 Helena Avenue in Larchmont is one of the original homes built by the Larchmont Manor Company in the 1860s. The nickname is apt: the Gothic cottage is decked out in bargeboard and that trim, along with a wraparound porch, hooded lintels and finials perched on the roof, make for an appealing first impression.

The interior shows some layers of alterations since it was first constructed as a summer cottage, with some historic details combined with more recent upgrades. The house has roughly 3,600 square feet of living space with five bedrooms and four bathrooms.

For some, the snowy view of the exterior might not add to the curb appeal, but the little house at 50 Worth Avenue sports a neat and tidy little appearance. Constructed in the 1840s, according to county land records, it also had an extensive recent renovation.

The compact, two-story house has three bedrooms and 1.5 baths and was most recently used as an Airbnb. The original, modest interior has been given some modern design notes with exposed beams, an open floor plan and french doors.

The new kitchen includes the ever-popular look of blue cabinets, brass hardware and open shelving.

The house sits just a few blocks from the end of Warren Street, the main street of Hudson.

The house is listed for $645,000 by Laura Miller of Historic Hudson Homes Real Estate.

65 eagle valley road

The least expensive, and most petite of the group, is this mid 19th century house at 65 Eagle Valley Road in Sloatsburg. Nestled near the Ramapo Mountains, the small town, founded in the 19th century, includes a MetroNorth train stop. A drive of just a few minutes brings you from the station to this renovated cottage. It has a wraparound porch and finial-topped dormers.

Amidst the renovation of the interior, there are still some historic details to be spotted, including an original newel post and wood floors. The house has three bedrooms and 1.5 baths.

barn

If you feel the need for more space there is plenty of room outside; the property includes more than an acre of land and a three-story barn.

It’s listed for $525,000 by Mary Ann M. Mitchell of Exp Realty.
