Relax in Style on the Porch of This Cheery Peekskill Queen Anne, Yours for $550K

    by

In one of Peekskill’s two downtown historic districts, this bright Queen Anne sits in a residential neighborhood filled with 19th century architecture and adjacent to the city’s commercial center. With a fetching two-story hexagonal porch and a bright paint job, it has more than a bit of curb appeal and on the inside there is the potential for an old house lover to burnish some historic details.

On a corner lot in the Nelson Avenue-Fort Hill Historic District, the single-family house on the market at 230 Nelson Avenue dates to the early 1890s.

The neighborhood already had a handful of dwellings early in the century, according to the National Register nomination report, but the building boom came in the mid 19th century when industry, and the increased population it brought, transformed the city. The subdivision of the former William Nelson estate in the 1880s included the creation of this corner lot at Nelson Avenue and Pauling Street.

A map from 1893 shows a house in place on the lot although, unlike some of the other houses, no owner’s name is indicated. John and Mary Naylor and their daughter Bertha were living in the house by at least 1899. The house was an easy distance from Mr. Naylor’s place of business on the Peekskill waterfront. With his brother George he operated the Naylor Brothers Foundry. While John died in 1919, the business was in operation until 1955.

Census records show Mary Naylor living in the spacious house on her own in 1930 and she was still in residence at her death in 1934.

The current owners have had the property since the 1990s, and a wealth of woodwork has survived on the interior. In addition to the listing photos, a virtual tour gives a chance to zoom in on mantels, built-ins, stained glass, period bathroom tiles and a rather interesting wall treatment in the vestibule. There is also a fair bit of wallpaper that might not be to everyone’s taste.

The roughly 2,374-square-foot house has a generous main level with parlors and dining room opening up off the large entry hall. That entry has a nicely detailed brick fireplace and an original stair, while the parlor has a wood mantel and the dining room has a built-in china cabinet with an inset stained-glass window.

There are two more built-ins around the corner on the way into the kitchen, along with a half bath. The kitchen is a bit of a layout challenge with multiple windows and doors, including one to a walk-in pantry, but the renovated space has a wood slat ceiling and wood cabinets.

Upstairs there are four bedrooms, a den with access to the wonderful porch, and the only full bath in the house. The largest bedroom has a wood mantel with original tile and a bed niche. There is carpeting on the floor so it is difficult to see the condition of the wood floor but those in the other bedrooms appear to be in good repair.

The one full bath is an intriguing one, with original tile covering the floors, walls and even the ceiling. The virtual tour shows the delicate ribboned swag design of the border tile. Next to a more modern medicine cabinet, a Delft blue windmill scene looks like it was inserted to patch some missing tile.

In addition to the lounging space on the porch, there is a fenced-in yard that wraps around the house and includes a patio.

The Peekskill Station, with Metro-North access to the city, is just under a mile from the house.

Listed with Magdalena Konkola of Houlihan Lawrence – Yorktown Brokerage, the house is priced at $550,000.
