Fridays at 11, Brownstoner Upstate brings you a selection of properties within three hours north, and a little east or west, of New York City.
After a confusing, long-winded discussion about the ambiguities of the upstate New York tax situation, nothing tends to cleanse the palate more than looking at some rental properties. We know; we’ve been looking at them a lot lately. Perhaps it’s our fear of commitment, but there’s something about finding a lovely, well-appointed rental that fulfills not only our desire to look at cool houses, but satisfies the interior design nerd part of our brain, as well. The four we chose today span from Ulster County all the way down to Rockland County, and they are oh-so-easy on the eyes, some with Hudson River views, and some located out in the country for the privacy junkies among us.
There aren’t a whole lot of interior shots of this Adirondack-style retreat house in the pretty Putnam County hamlet of Garrison, but it truly doesn’t matter. We love the greenhouse space, the pond, and the eclectic mix of styles on display here. The rent seems like a good deal for a 3,000 square foot space situated on 5 acres, just north of Manitou and right near the Hudson River. Beds:Â 3. Baths: 3.5. Square Feet: 3,000. Lot Size: 5 acres.

A true mid-century modern, this Newburgh, Orange County rental has some sweet views of the Hudson and is located in a nice, tree-lined residential estate. We adore its exterior asymmetry, and the interior is something else, too. Check out the kitchen (which includes a pizza oven) and all the windows in the living room area. Lot size is nearly an acre. Beds: 3. Baths: 2. Square Feet: 2,850. Lot Size: .91 acre.

Why such a steep rent for a 2 bed/1 bath ranch in the Ulster County hamlet of Accord? Most likely because it’s a seasonal rental, and while the season is almost over, it’s still available until the end of September. The contemporary interior is top-notch, and behold! There’s an even an screened-in porch that gives you a sheltered place to sleep almost under the stars. What’s that, you say? You’ve never slept overnight on a screened-in porch in the country? Then you haven’t LIVED! Beds: 2. Baths: 1. Square Feet: 1,056. Lot Size: 1.5 acres.

Some may argue that Rockland County is not technically located in upstate New York. We’re on the fence about it, ourselves, but we’re always willing to make allowances for nice-looking properties in areas that are bucolic enough, like this adorable riverside cottage on an acre. Includes a pool, stone patio, mooring, and an additional riverfront plot. Beds: 1. Baths: 2. Square Feet: 935. Lot Size: 1.17 acres.
