  1. Re Pawlenty:
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Republican presidential hopeful Tim Pawlenty laid out an economic vision for America on Tuesday that would cut taxes and dramatically reduce the size and scope of government operations.

Among his more novel ideas: If you can find it on Google, the government shouldn’t be doing it.

“We can start by applying what I call ‘The Google Test.’ If you can find a good or service on the Internet, then the federal government probably doesn’t need to be doing it,” Pawlenty said.

Among the services he would cut: Amtrak, the U.S. Postal Service, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and the Government Printing Office.

Pawlenty said those organizations “were all built for a time in our country when the private sector did not adequately provide those products. That’s no longer the case.”

Interpreted broadly, the test could spell the end of federal involvement in the storage of nuclear waste, environmental clean-up efforts and disaster relief — all services that a Google search reveals are offered by private sector firms.

And we all see how much integrity the private sector has when it comes to these things. Just look at the banks and financial services industries. when the dollar is the only thing you care about, everything else falls by the wayside. It’s no longer about providing great service or product, it’s about making the biggest buck you can and the rest be damned. Nothing wrong with making a profit- how else would a business survive? But when it becomes all about the profit and nothing else- well, we’re seeing the results everywhere.

  2. I definitely think there are more important things to discuss than Weiner’s pickle.
How about Sarah Paling’s rewrite of the midnight ride of paul revere?

  3. I’ll mtch horror stories with the Brevoort branch any day of the week. I’ve been waiting 4 days to have them redeliver something. They are beyond incompetent.

  4. No- especially not the Post Office. But the alternative? It’ll be $15.00 to mail a letter and there will be no Amtrak at all.

I’m sure you’re right about the percentages, but the 10%? They do a hell of a lot of damage.

  5. But someone did earlier- can’t remember who, though.

Ok- So sorry about about Oscar and Serafin. It’s terrible to lose a fish and have to flush them down the toilet yourself. I would have sent flowers but I wasn’t sure what would have been appropriate. Dogwood? Cat o’nine tails?

Joking- I know it isn’t fun to lose any pet, especially after investing time and care. Are you getting another pair?
