Rumors are swirling that Al’s Grocery, a longtime fixture a the corner of 3rd Street and Hoyt, is about to be replaced by a jazz bar. “Ours is a quiet residential block with a lot of young families recently moved in and far removed from the commercial bustle of Smith Street,” writes one concerned neighbor. “We’re not looking forward drunks sitting on our stoops or pissing in our already-truncated front yards.” Word is that the beer and wine license is a non-issue because it transfers with the lease. Anyone have more deets? GMAP
I was born and raised in Brooklyn and so were my parents. I see it both ways as do many of the more sensible posters here. Bottom line though — this is a residential neighborhood and businesses (and even some noisy neighbors) need to respect that.
The number one 311 complaint (since 311 started) across all 5 boroughs is NOISE, followed by rodents. Doesn’t matter if you live in Manhattan, Brooklyn or Staten Island, everyone complains about noise. They must ALL be newbie, NYMby home-owners, right.
Uhh, yeah. AREA is great, but not 4 location try like 20 locations. 4 on Smith St. Hey Betty, wanna have a drink?
I love smith st. AREA has the best stores on the block, they have 4 of them. I wish AREA would open a jazz bar for kids & adults. how about that?
ooooh, hoyt & 3rd are so so SO SCARY!!! i’m afraid to walk alone there at night, maybe a lost black person or latino– i think that’s what they call them now– might jump out of the shadows & scream BOOOO!!
get a goddamn grip, anonymous fraidycat: call the 7-6 & ask them abt crimes there. white people– & by this i mean all the new white yuppie $$$– need to learn to live, period.
also, aside from South Brooklyn/Red Hook (fuck ‘Carroll Gardens’ bullshit, tho’ it’s better the “______) Hill”– killer views there, however), you also live on the edge of ** GOWANUS **, an industrial area way more toxic shit to worry about than even the worst frat bar (which i loathe as well– if the terrorists blow up Angry Wade someday i’ll just laff, tho’ i hope American Apparel goes up with it.)
peace,
Wally
How about a jazz strip bar?
i randomly came across this blog, and just want to say this is the probably the dumbest conversation i have ever seen. Is a jazz bar really that horrible? My goodness, be happy it isnt a strip club.
i must say you folks are a bunch of whiners. In my town of hoboken, we welcome bars…and if we find someone pissing on our door, we beat the crap out of them.
I live on Bergen & Hoyt where the Brooklyn Inn resides. It is a perfectly fine establishment that respects the neighbors, and as CrownHeightsProud stated, it helps tremendously with safety. This coming from someone who was mugged at gunpoint in Brooklyn a year and a half ago.
I live on 3rd between Smith and Hoyt and seriously, what’s the difference between potential late night bar noise and the nearby shipping yard’s loudspeaker, which wakes me up every morning at 7 am. It depends on how you look at it. I’d rather be kept up late than woken up early.
