checkmark1113.jpgThanks to the 1,182 readers who took the time to fill out our most recent reader survey. As promised, we’ve got some results to share with you. First of all, 87% of respondents live in Brooklyn, with the most represented neighborhoods being Park Slope, Clinton Hill, Carroll Gardens, Bed Stuy, Fort Greene and Brooklyn Heights, in that order. Just over 95% of respondents have at least a college degree, with about half of those also having a graduate degree of some kind. Given the education data, it’s not hugely surprising that about 70% of respondents said they earn $100,000 or more a year. Two-thirds of survey takers also own their own place: Of those, 58% own a house, 24% a co-op and 18% a condo. More than half of those currently renting plan to buy within the next two years. And we’re a conservative bunch: 70% have locked in a fixed rate mortgage. When it comes to maintenance and repairs, over 60% of homeowners drop at least $2,500 a year. And we were happy to see this last stat: 36% of people who took the time to respond said they visit the site anywhere from several times a day to obsessively.

  1. 11:20, I agree. I’ve mentioned that in my survey the past two times…

11:41, what do you mean by PS2? If you mean what I think you mean, then that’s super offensive, and you are a bigot and an a$$.

Look at the neighborhoods represented – some of them (Bed Stuy, Clinton Hill, Fort Greene) have huge populations of people of color, many of whom are college educated and middle class (like me, although I do fall way short of the average Brownstoner salary). I don’t know that anything is keeping people of color from more frequently accessing this site, so I am not blaming anyone for this one-sided demographic. I would just be curious to see those numbers and am disappointed that Brownstoner isn’t as interested in that as me, ans 11:20, and probably a few other people, that’s all.

Don’t jump on people for asking questions and being curious.

P.S. What would be so horrible about cyberspace being racially balanced?! In this day of $300 computers, it isn’t such a crazy goal, is it?

  2. 11:20 you are absolutely right would have been 98%+ but then again that’s probably because you cant use surveymoney from a PS2…

God what a dumb comment…but I’m sure you won’t rest until the demographic of cyberspace is 100% racially balanced…

  3. The survey used cookies to prevent that from happening. It’s also hard to imagine why anyone would want to fill out more than one. Also, the results are pretty consistent with the results from last February. For example, in both surveys, 87% of respondents said they live in Brooklyn.

  4. How ’bout a ‘Day in the life of brownstoner’ video? You wake up, grab a cup of coffee at Choices, head on down to Dumbo, log in (what does your screen look like?), peruse the news and link relative stories, take a break, go out and take progress shots for ‘Development Watch’, select your HOTD and COTD, etc. What’s it like to be you?
