On the top floor of a Crown Heights limestone, this one-bedroom rental has a bit of period detail and an updated kitchen. The finishes are neutral throughout, and a flexible layout means a renter can decide whether they want to set up the largest room, featuring an original mantel, as the living room or bedroom.
It is in the early 20th century dwelling at 1351 Dean Street, in the Crown Heights North Historic District. Builder John A. Bliss filed plans for a number of houses on the block in the summer of 1902. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported that this house was not yet completed in November of 1902 when Bliss sold it to Bernard F. and Helen Muench. By 1940 the former single-family home was converted to a three-family, a historic i-card shows.
With entry via the main staircase on the parlor level, renters can soak in more details before making the climb to the top floor. The unit itself has the kitchen and bedroom at one end, a bathroom in the middle, and the largest room facing the street.
The latter has a bay window, wall moldings, wood floors, and the mantel. The listing photos show it set up as a bedroom. It does have a closet as well as access to a hallway, likely a former pass-through, with some built-in storage. The hallway leads to the rear room, which also has a closet.
Access to the kitchen is either via the main stairwell or via that rear room — making it perhaps more practical to have that space set up as a living room with easy access into the kitchen.
The kitchen itself has a wall of exposed brick, tile floor, and room for a breakfast bar. There are white cabinets, a white subway tile backsplash, and some open shelving.
Malika Oyo of Compass has the listing and it is priced at $3,000 a month. If you want to see it in person there is an open house on March 7, by appointment only. What do you think?
