Sometimes good things happen to good organizations. The Rockaway Waterfront Alliance, which has been spearheading relief efforts in Southeast Queens since Hurricane Sandy, recently received a $1,500 donation from Applebee’s and the Queens Tourism Council.

The money was raised via Breakfast with Santa, an event that took place at the Applebee’s branches in Astoria, Bayside, Fresh Meadows and Rego Park on Dec. 22, 2012.

February is Black History Month in the United States, and two Corona venues are participating in the NYC 5 Boro Passport to Culture Tour. Visitors to the Louis Armstrong House Museum and the Langston Hughes Community Library & Cultural Center can simply check in at each site and pick up a gift from Applebee’s. (Mention promo code NYCbhm for 10% off a meal purchase.) While supplies last, each Armstrong House guest will receive a rare 1931 photograph of Satchmo in New Orleans. An excerpt from the jazz legend’s own, never-before-published manuscript is printed on the reverse. Langston Hughes Library visitors can check out New York City’s largest circulating Black Heritage reading collection with roughly 40,000 volumes of material about Black Culture. In the other boroughs, the participating sites are the African Burial Ground National Monument, MoCADA, Harlem’s National Jazz Museum, Sandy Ground Historical Society Museum, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Weeksville Heritage Center and the Woodlawn Conservancy.

QNYC, the Queens Tourism Council and Applebee’s are partnering to raise money for the Rockaways. Tomorrow, December 22, four borough Applebee’s will host Breakfast with Santa, and patrons will get a Polaroid photo with the Man in Red and a buffet including scrambled eggs, potatoes, sausage, pancakes, bacon, toast, orange juice and coffee or tea. All the proceeds will go to the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance, a nonprofit which responded to Hurricane Sandy by giving homebound residents hot meals and providing emergency food and clothing from a firehouse. Volunteers then delivered emergency supplies door-to-door. Currently, RWA has been clearing streets by removing sand and debris. For years, Applebee’s has hosted Breakfast with Santa events on Staten Island. This is its first venture into Queens. Let’s show our community spirit and love of a good breakfast with a good man.
