Queensboro Bridge

The greatest joy of practicing law in Queens is the incredible diversity. Queens residents come from over 100 different nations and speak over 130 languages, but they are all concerned with taking care of their families, making a living, having good schools for their children, and getting along as best as they can.

As you travel along Roosevelt Avenue from Sunnyside, through Corona and into Flushing, you see a multitude of small businesses, some starting up, and some that have served their neighborhoods for years. These stores often provide an essential connection with home for many people newly arrived in the United States, and provide wealth and upward mobility for their owners.

The children of these immigrants who work so hard for their families can be found in the colleges that make Queens a center of learning. LaGuardia Community College, Queens College and St. John’s have students from as many countries and who speak as many languages as Queens as a whole.

During my years in Queens I have met people from all over the world, from Nepal and China, from every country in Central and South America, and from Europe and Africa as well. The diversity of their traditions has enriched my life. I have come to see that while we may have different customs and speak different languages, we all want the same thing, a chance at a good life here in America just as immigrants have wanted who have come to this country since its founding. Seeing and learning this has been the best thing about working in the borough of Queens. I’m proud to call it my home.
