The Residences at the Williamsburg, the condo-meets-hotel-development that we checked out in June, started sales two months ago. Since then, the 57-unit building is already 30 percent spoken for. In case you forgot, these were the units gussied up with programmable air and light settings, as well as a camera you could watch through your IPhone. The hotel is planned to open next March. Curbed grabbed this photo yesterday as the scaffolding came down.

  1. “I always wonder, even if these people like what they’re buying now, don’t they think about how these properties are going to age?”

are you suggesting that people buy property in NYC based solely on their outside appearance?

pretty sure you’ve said umpteen times on threads regarding buildings on 4th Ave in the Slope that people live INSIDE their apartments. lots of people really don’t give a damn what the outside looks like. you prewar, period detail loving brownstoners are a very small subsection of the NYC real estate market. to say you’re somehow more well informed than the people who buy in these buildings is kinda arrogant. different strokes, different folks.

  2. Is it going to be all the rage in 10 years? Probably not. I always wonder, even if these people like what they’re buying now, don’t they think about how these properties are going to age? This doesn’t even look good in 2010, I fail to see how this will look good in 10/20 years.

Some people may not like pre-war but at least it’s timeless. Until NYC developers figure out a way to build timeless new construction, I think the future of these types of buildings is not very bright.

  3. Given the architect (Gene Kaufman), this is pretty good. Not sure I can be more damning with faint praise, but it’s a cut above the Decora and some of the other crap he has foisted on this city.

  4. fair enough – can’t say i’m psyched about this thing either, but compared to the other new construction buildings seems like you get more for your $$$. curious to see if the douche factor is as high as the ganz.

  5. Dh,

I should have said, “in my opinion” after my comment.

But seriously, I don’t believe that most people who buy in Williamsburg do so because they think their building is beautiful, I think they do it because they like the neighborhood. Some people (I’m one of them) need both.

Isn’t this the building that’s being marketed to be the Gansevoort Hotel of Williamsburg? Sounds special.
