Yesterday in the Architect’s Newspaper, SHoP confirmed that Forest City Ratner will indeed build the first of the 14 planned residential towers at Atlantic Yards using modular construction. According to Chris Sharples, the principal of SHoP Architects, “Ratner is not just in it for the money. He is looking to design something of quality in an innovative way. FCR is very interested in the design/build process.” This will be the first modular high rise design for SHoP, and also the largest prefabricated structure in the world. SHoP plans to build the foundation and podium on site, and the modular units will be constructed at FCR’s factory at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. As Atlantic Yards Report pointed out, FCR has yet to make a public announcement on the modular design. The news was expected from the developer around Christmastime.
