bike-congestion-0610.jpg
This was a first for us: En route to the office this morning we encountered actual congestion in the bike lane along Navy Street, though the strikingly homogeneous group of riders remained quite civil as they pulled up to the intersection and waited, law-abidingly, for the light to turn green. As we approached Sands Street, everyone else made a left towards the Manhattan Bridge as we continued on towards Dumbo.

  1. Shit, I’ve even been hit by guys on bikes a few times. It sucks. Pedestrians, take comfort in knowing if you DO get hit by a bike – chances are the rider will be in much worse shape than you are!!

One of the guys that hit me flew over his handlebars and landed on his face. We were both so frazzled we actually hugged it out Entourage style.

  2. I walk, bike and drive in the city regularly. I’ve never had a problem with any particular “group” of which I am part of all of them. I just watch my ass and look both ways. I really don’t understand what all the fuss is about.

  3. I’m not getting at you personally Gem (you know I love ya) but this city (as it grows) needs to be more accommodating to bikers, pedestrians etc. Read Gross’s comment…he/she summed it up perfectly. More drivers is not good for the overall health of this city and as we gain population we need to be better prepared to deal with all of these new problems. Adding some bike lanes is one way to help alleviate the choking congestion which could eventually suffocate this city….literally and figuratively.

Biff, personal experience. 1 car has almost run me over, 4-5 bikes have, all going fast. The car driver apologized, the cyclists didn’t.”

Personally, I’d take 4-5 bikes running me over than even just 1 car, with or without an apology (assumption of gruesome death versus injury). That said, there are a ton of dickish/idiotic bike riders out there – they embarass me as a bike rider.

  5. Raise your hand if you or anyone you know has ever been seriously hurt in an automobile accident.

Now raise your hand if anyone you know has ever been seriously injured by a cyclist.

    Thanks.

  6. Car drivers are pissy with bikers becuase of sour grapes on account of the great road grab; pedestrians are pissy with the jumping number of bikers because their saftey is now threatened in additional areas where cars were banned -bridge pedestrian/bike lane disasters – unexpected wrong-way cyclists; and cyclists are pissy with drivers because now there’s a critical mass of cyclists and they can shout for their rights at last.

And then there’s the unreconstructed America-the-land-of-the-automobile chauvinists and the holier-than-thou-saving-the-world cyclists thrown into the mix too.
