RE Greed Reaches New Level in Cobble Hill

Most New Yorkers are pretty used to tales of landlords evicting tenants in the pursuit of profit maximization. But even the most hardened free-marketeer must have raised his eyebrows at yesterday’s report of two elederly sisters being kicked out of the Cobble Hill townhouse where they grew up by their nephew, Joseph DeLeonibus. Adding another layer of intrigue was the listing for the Cheever Place property on Corcoran: “House is being offered for $999,999, without seeing it, without inspecting it, must close in 30 days, must be all cash and must take tenants in place.” Sounds a little desperate to us. There must be more to the story.
Hit the Bricks, Granny! [NY Daily News]
Are you people in third grade? Why gossip about the lives of others?
One of the drawbacks of being a tenant is that your right to occupy is only one or two years.
That’s what I figured. Joshk is really annoying, but he’s right. Put up or shut up, you bleeding heart (but zipped pocket book) liberals! If you folks really care, let those women stay at your house, with your family.
I’m a landlord with a lot of building management experience. Most of you sound like rent controled tenants. It’s easy to complain. Let’s see you actually DO SOMETHING for these ladies!
But guess what? There’s no chance in hell you will. All you can do is complain, because that’s all you know how to do.
You all do realize that you are debating/ranting about an article that ran in the NY DAILY NEWS, right?
I know the family very well. Leonard Visconti and his blushing bride are scums of the earth. They are living off the old lady,to pay for their drugs and booze, and the LL gets stuck with everything else.
I know for a fact the son of one of the old ladies is a druggie. He was always a bum. He lived in the park and on the train. His cousin was good enough to give him a place to live. To take care of his own mother. He took very good care of her welfare check. The older sister has childeren and grandchildren, non of them want anything to do with her. How long does Joseph DeLeonibus have to support them.
I used to live on the block. The older sister is the biggest trouble maker around. All the neighbors hated her. The son of the other old sister is a crack head and his wife drink all the time. They don’t work. Where do they get their money from? I’ll tell you where. The son and daughter-in-law take the old ladies check and food stamps for drugs, booze and smokes. So can you blame the nephew?
I don’t want to make this a political blog but please lets not start citing the French as an example of how our housing and economic system should be structured. We have seen in recent weeks, in part, the results of the French’s hyper-regulated economic and housing systems (confining dark skinned Muslim and north African citizens to govt. sponsored ghettos, but hey at least the housing is free). France also has a 35 hour work week (violation punishable under penalty of law), 5 weeks mandated vacation at 10+% unemployment. I wanted to live in France, I would move to San Francisco. There are three sides to every story: Mr. DeLeonibus side; his aunts’ side; and the truth. Sadly but not surprisingly the press has chosen only to tell one of those sides. Hopefully some private social service organization will be there to lend these ladies a helping hand. If not, the good progressives of the Brownstoner family should step up to the plate with some of their own money instead of opining on how to someone else should spend there’s. Viva free market capitalism (or it’s limited version here in NYC). Big up bloggers Josh K and Iceberg for injecting some common sense into this pitiful debate.
i’m confused. it says must take tenants in place. doesn’t that mean the ladies stay? is it a 2 family. couldn’t they have 1 apartment until they died? just wondering?
Corcoran should have had better sense than to take the listing in the first place…. It is very bad pr…. this is the story that should be written. How could someone in good conscience really represent this guy…
When I saw who the listing broker was…. Patricia Neinast… I wasn’t surprised..
