Park Slope Neighbors conducted a radar gun study along Prospect Park West and found that average speeds on Prospect Park West have been reduced by nearly 25% by the addition of bike lanes. The group, which has been pro-bike lane from the beginning, also reported that the number of cars traveling more than 40 mph has been cut by 95 percent. “Prospect Park West has been transformed from a noisy speedway on which nearly every vehicle was speeding to a calmer, quieter neighborhood street on which the great majority of drivers are now obeying the speed limit,” commented Park Slope Neighbors campaign coordinator Eric McClure. “What a difference a lane makes.” Brooklyn Borough President, who opposed the creation of the bike lanes, wasn’t buying it. “Double-parking is still commonplace and the result is more noise from car-honking, more pollution from traffic jams and more frustration to residents and visitors alike,” Markowitz told The Brooklyn Paper.

  1. Most cars don’t speed through the intersection against the light, wasder. These morons come racing through between cars.

I saw some dickwad hit a guy crossing the street in a wheelchair once. The police really need to crack down on them.

I cannot ever recall seeing a car speed through a traffic light in my history here in NYC and they certainly do not if the cars in front of them are stopped at the light.

  2. Lets see,
    1. there is a protected lane for cyclists
    2. travel time has NOT been significantly increased(all you do is get to the next light slower).
    3. yes there is more horn honking- mostly during high travel times.
    4. speeds have been reduced.

    sounds like a massive failure.

double parking to unload is actually allowed. You just can’t wait around. Sounds like the normal impatient aggressive driver honking to me.
BTW you won’t be getting people out of cars by cutting bus routes and increasing head times and fares.

there will be an article next week about some bike rider whining that they were ticketed for going through a red light…

all of this sounds like a positive result.

  3. ditto, I’ve been hit twice by bicyclists. My ribs were so badly bruised the first time, I couldn’t sleep on that side for over two months. Just last week, I almost got hit a third time, while in the crosswalk with the light. The rider threatened to punch me in the face in response to my reaction to almost being hit. That’s right; he was ready to assault me to ensure his right to break the law. That said, I think the city is safer for having bike lanes than if it did not.

  4. A speeding car has far greater capacity to cause mayhem and damage than a red light jumping bike though ditto. More noise, more pollution, greater danger with a car. Comparison runs aground there.

  5. it’s not like they are plowing thru your backyard. newsflash, prospect park aint anyones backyard even tho people like to pretend it is..

i dont know, ive never had a problem with speedy cars, maybe one or two maniacs on 4th avenue making crazy turns, but 99 percent of the time that im almost mowed down by something speedy… yeah, it’s a bike. and then they get all angry at you for being in THEIR way, bitch please. pedestrian rights trump all.
