The dust-up over the Prospect Park West bike lane refuses to die. Today the Brooklyn Paper has op-eds from Councilman Brad Lander about why he thinks the Prospect Park West bike lane is a success and Louise Hainline, a member of Neighbors for Better Bike Lanes, covering her opinions on why the lane is problematic. From Lander’s: “Yes, there has been controversy. But it’s time to accept the facts: Extensive data show the project is a success. The community board asked for it. The vast majority of neighborhood residents support it. The Department of Transportation is proposing a few modifications to make it work even better. Prospect Park West is safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and even drivers.” From Hainline’s: “Under the guise of ‘traffic calming,’ and ignoring other viable alternatives, the city removed an automobile lane, thereby causing congestion as well as significant air and noise pollution. When drivers drop off elderly and disabled passengers and local businesses access customers on Prospect Park West, a busy thoroughfare is reduced to a single lane.” Perhaps Hainline’s argument would be a bit more persuasive if she had stuff like actual data backing it up…

  1. >ill it take an elderly person actually getting killed in traffic for this cadre fanatics to give up on this campaign to shove bike lanes down the public’s throat?

What are you smoking? The public clearly wants bike lanes and traffic calming. It’s only a minority of vocal car fanatics who object.

  2. incredible. how many people have been killed on flatbush and atlantic – where there are no bike lanes – with no political outcry whatsoever? it sounds almost like “orlando ozio” wishes someone would get hurt, just to support a political position. and that is pretty messed up (and sad – to use the elderly as your posterboys).

  3. Yes, because Lander’s pre-cooked, Sadik-Khan approved “report” amounts to “actual data.” Will it take an elderly person actually getting killed in traffic for this cadre fanatics to give up on this campaign to shove bike lanes down the public’s throat?

  4. so tired of rehashing the debate over these highly successful safety improvements over and over and over again. these NIMBYs need to move on with their lives.

  5. “one entirely new entryway will be created on the corner of Henry and Atlantic.” That’s very interesting since the site is 2 blocks from Atlantic.

  6. And Landers position might be more compelling with independent, scientific data “the survey was not a randomly-sampled public opinion poll”
Both sides are using gut responses;it works for me so it must be good for all. It doesn’t so it must be bad.
