In addition to a location an easy stroll from Prospect Park, this early 20th century townhouse offers up a wealth of original details including mantels, plasterwork, wainscoting and even a bathroom outfitted in original tile.

Described in the Park Slope Historic District designation report as “severely neo-Classical,” 583 5th Street is one of a stretch of 14 houses designed by the prolific Axel Hedman for builder Eli Bishop. A straight stoop leads up to a small terrace and an ornamented parlor level with rusticated stone and foliate details on the window keystones. Hedman included a mix of angled and rounded bays along the row; No. 583 has a full-height rounded bay. Completed and advertised for sale in 1908, the “artistic” houses were designed without basements but with steam heat, electric lights, burglar alarms and other “new and novel features.”

The single-family hasn’t changed hands since the 1980s and while there are some updates that a new owner would want to make the numerous original details appear to be in fine repair.

The details start in the parlor with moldings, a pier mirror, wood floors with an inlaid border and a ceiling medallion. It also has French doors that are a more modern replacement.

Wood floors continue into the middle parlor, which is packed with ornate plasterwork, wainscoting, a built-in bench and a columned mantel with original tile and glass-fronted bookcases on either side. A powder room is tucked under the stairs. The detail-packed middle parlor is a feature of the Hedman houses on the row; a previous House of the Day on 5th street has almost, but not quite, identical details.

More woodwork abounds in the dining room, again similar to other houses on the row, with wainscoting, a plate shelf and a columned mantel topped with glass-fronted cabinets.

Upstairs are two floors of bedroom space with two large bedrooms per floor and a bonus small bedroom or office space on the top floor. The four large bedrooms all have columned mantels with mirrors and original tile. On the second floor, the bedrooms have fretwork screens dividing them from corner marble sinks and original built-in storage. They share a full bath with original subway tile on the walls and delicate garland-ornamented border tile. There is another full bath, this one with a shower, on the third floor.

There aren’t any listing photos of the cellar, which is reachable from an exterior door and via a stair from the kitchen. According to the listing, the space is newly renovated, and the floor plan shows it includes three private offices, a nook with a refrigerator (not a full kitchen) and a half bath. At the rear of the cellar is the laundry room along with another half bath.

Fencing encloses the paved rear yard, which has a raised planting bed and room for dining.
