  1. Tavern on Nostrand was a good place to go to. However, since their initial chef left, the food has gone downhill. Last time I went, I had to send back the salmon because it was uncooked in the middle.

  2. That’s a nice website, Hal. Thanks for posting it and sharing positive news about yet another brownstone community in Brooklyn that has yet to be fully “discovered.” BTW, when we were looking for a house back in ’88, we seriously considered 2 wonderful houses on Dean Street. In the end, we went with PLG and a limestone on Ocean Avenue across from Prospect Park. But I’m sure we would have been just as satisfied in Crown Heights. Good luck with the landmark designation efforts. The grand architecture of Crown Heights is very much deserving of the designation.

  3. Actually, Gals, I’m OK living here, considering the price. It certainly beats Brownsville, Ocean Hill, Canarsie, the nastier parts of Bed-Stuy, Bushwick, or the South Bronx, which would be my other housing options given the price. And I see that the area has potential, given its location and the superb architecture of the historic district. It’s just discouraging that, having been here over a year, I’ve seen so little progress in everything except real estate prices. When I moved here, I did hope that things would get better — in fact, I chose here over Crown Heights because I thought it had more potential, but now it seems Crown Heights has made a lot more progress (and has a much greater supply of absolutely gorgeous architecutre – -why is there still no Crown Heights Historic District?).

Additionally, I would have to mention that based on my appearance (white) I’ve gotten a few comments and nasty looks from people who live here and automatically assume that I’m a rich gentrifier — when nothing could be further from the truth!

And in resposne to someone who suggested that I was trying to hold prices down, I’d like to retort that it seems that certain homeowners are trying to drive prices up by pretending that this is paradise.

    And BTW, I’m very pro-union 🙂

  4. To the unhappy PLG poster: Welcome to the real world. Damn. Too bad it’s not so nice all the time! In fact, sometimes, we have to actually deal with the cards we are dealt. Right now, your hand says you don’t have the money to live where you really want to live. Gee. I feel for you. But, griping about your lousy hand on this forum won’t change your prospects of winning. Not unless your idea of “winning” is to figure out how many negative retorts you can come up with whenever you are shown a more positive way of viewing your current situation.

So, yes, on one level you have definitely won! If nothing else, you have the won the game of proving to the rest of us that you are unhappy and miserable living in PLG and you wish you could escape the hell of your residential existence. Got it.

  5. Maybe you feel comfortable going to these areas, but they scare me (ditto the Western Beef parking lot or anywhere on Empire Blvd at night). And the first time I was ever on Sullivan Street was lat week when the B44 bus I was on was detoured because Nostrand Ave was closed off following the (still unexplained) broad daylight shooting that took place there last week…

Not to mention the inevitab;e violence that alsways occurs at Carnival — this year two people were shot in front of the Clean Rite laundry where I do my wash.

I feel so sorry for you.

It is unfortunate that your economic situation forces you to live in an area that clearly scares you and demoralizes your spirit to the extent that you can’t see what others find to love about PLG.

You don’t seem to have much joy in your life, so I will allow you the last word if that gives you any.
