Cofounders of Calico Wallpaper, Rachel and Nick Cope naturally gravitated toward their favorite wall covering when designing their refined Red Hook rental.

The Copes’ artful home — in an 1860s waterfront warehouse — features a number of their trademark marbled wallpapers and was recently featured in Dwell. Calico custom creates each installation, painting the design at a smaller scale with the proper dimensions, then photographing, enlarging, printing, and installing it in place.

The couple developed this unique technique in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy when their official jobs were put on hold and flooding made it difficult for the duo to leave the house. By the spring of 2013, they’d hung their first Calico installation in the main room and officially started their company.

“Wallpaper completely transforms a space. It can make a mixed-use office or studio feel like separate rooms, and create a completely different environment,” Rachel Cope told Dwell.

The Copes’ calico cat, Irie, inspired the name of their wallpaper company.

In the kitchen, a set of plywood tiles designed by Moonish are installed with a magnetic mounting system that allows the Copes to rearrange them into new compositions.
