Despite Ikea’s resistance to the idea of eliminating one lane of southbound car traffic for a four-block long bike lane on Columbia Street, the city went ahead and started painting. A tipster sent in this photo of a bike lane that’ll take you right to their yellow entrance.

  1. (Also, it looks like they are going to unrestrict the parking on that stretch too… those “No Parking Anytime” signs will probably be replaced with either standard residential street cleaning signs or perhaps 2-hr parking)

  2. Yeah — Ikea has some sort of stick up their butts. The bike lane probably isn’t necessary BUT it’s also not harmful. The traffic is very light on this stretch… Not to mention, the MAJOR reason they got approval to build their big box on the waterfront was due to the PARK they were required to build. Vehicular access (both bike and car) is to the park too! Not just the store!

In summary — Suck it Ikea! (Oh, and, Mmmmm… Meatballs.)

  3. I’ve biked to Ikea to shop. Large items can be home-delivered; small items (and Ikea sells MANY of them) will fit in bike bags. Of course, I’m now much less likely to shop at Ikea now that they loudly opposed this bike lane.

But this bike lane isn’t just to serve Ikea. It also serves other mobility needs around Red Hook. I used these bike lanes on Saturday to bike from Fort Greene to Red Hook.

  4. this street is used by those of us riding to red hook (van brunt shops, fairway, pier) as well as just visiting the ikea park. having biked this road many times, never felt a bike lane was all that necessary.
