This house at 494 East 16th Street has a lot going for it. It’s not the biggest or the fanciest house in Ditmas Park, but the corner house has some beautiful floors, beams and moldings to recommend it. The 2,900-square-foot pad sold for $930,000 in 2007 and is now asking $1,035,000. Reasonable?

  1. wasder, the immediate area looks great, but, as mentioned above, the surrounding areas are very high crime and it can spill over, that’s all.

tybur6, I don’t think so, prices are still massively high from 5 years ago! I’ve just seen a lot of hate on houses like this on this site and most of it doesn’t seem tongue in cheek.

  2. ncarty97 — Whatever answer will keep Brownstoner out of my neighborhood and suppress housing prices.

(Though, it’s interesting you chose that part out of my whole post…. maybe my plan is working!)

  3. Couldn’t agree with the negative comments more…

Not only is it infested with Flatbush crime, it’s basically the worst of the suburbs stuffed into Brooklyn. The one big difference compared to the suburbs is that the schools in this neighborhood are ATROCIOUS. Your kid will certainly be dumber after a year of school than before…. and probably have a couple gunshot wounds and an STD.

  4. Rob,

People would pay that to live there because they get the beauty and outside space of the suburbs without the 1-1.5hr commute. Too bad the surrounding area is so vile. I’d love to be able to have a house with a full yard and no shared walls and only have a 40 minute commute to work!
