If you’re a Wall Street Journal reader, you may already be familiar with this new listing at 180 Washington Park in Fort Greene—the 22-foot brownstone was featured when it hit the market earlier this month with a price tag of $2,750,000, most likely because it was owned by Spike Lee back in the 1990s. We’re certainly digging the location, size and type of the house. There’s also tons of original detail that is right up our alley. The renovation, though, feels too over-the-top to us. Call us old-fashioned, but the glitziness and polish of the whole thing feels a little out of place for Fort Greene. And that yard? What were they thinking? We suspect the sellers would have been better served by a more understated approach, especially when it comes to reselling in these non-boom times.

  1. DIBS, why do you think it has to do with how much money people spend? My friends who spent 6M for their brownstone in the Heights do not have an ensuite bathroom. They actually go into the hallway! My other friends who recently bought a 1.9M weekend place don’t have one either.

It is a question of respecting the authenticity of a particular building. If you buy a McMansion, you should have an ensuite bathroom. If you buy a historic brownstone–or an old farmhouse–you shouldn’t. Pretty simple.

  2. rob, there needs to be a door separating the bathroom. Besides, everyone likes his own brand.

I don’t want my guests’ poo mist in my master bathroom. In your words, GAAAACCCCKKKKKKK

  3. i will always stand firm in my belief that en suite (which is probably french for poo mist) bathrooms are just gross and dave probably only insists on them so he doesnt have to lug around his enema bag from room to room or something

  4. Is it a carbon footprint/green issue with you?? I’m just wondering why you can’t grasp the fact that once you start spending certain amounts of money on a home, why the luxuries are not important and, in your mind, become “obscene.”

Is there a Quaker/Puritanical thing that I’m missing?? “I will force myself to bathe and poop in the smallest possible space that one can imagine.”

  5. So yours is more an argument about what’s an appropriate amount of space for each room, shillstoner? Where’s the cutoff??? Mine is 9′ X 14′. It’s got two sinks, a toilet, a standard whirlpool and a shower stall. Is that too large and obscene and in bad taste?? There’s also one down the hall for the second bedroom that is about 5′ X 12′. Should that be reduced to the standard 5′ X 7′ because it’s obscene & tasteless???

    I’ve also got a walk-in closet that’s about 5′ X 9′. Is that too obscene & tasteless????
