House of the Day: 795 East 19th Street
Has the area around Brooklyn College really come this far? A charming Dutch Colonial house at 795 East 19th Street that traded for $715,000 in 2003 is now on the market for $1,395,000. One house two blocks away at 955 East 18th Street, by comparison, sold for $955,000 last summer. Granted it’s probably not as nice but still…it makes you think.

An agenda, everyone on here has one..even you
12:24 am. Why is it too high when it is so bigm but a 500sf condo for 549k ins’t in parkslope on awful 4th ave? the price per square foot is much higher than this.
why is it ok when people boost neighborhoods like park slope, brooklyn heights, clinton hill, fort green etc… and not areas slightly further away and more affordable, like fiske terrace, midwood, ditmas park etc….?!
Which of the newer details have an Asian flair? I didn’t notice any while I was there for the OH. There were several pieces of Asian furniture and possibly a ceiling light in the house. Otherwise the kitchen/bath renos looked pretty “racially-neutral”. The heritage of the current owners seems pretty irrelevant to this conversation.
It is extraordinary that Asian people could possibly own such a historically “White” house, though, isn’t it?
This house is in Fiske Terrace, which, as above posters have noted, is soon to be landmarked.
Although Fiske Terrace is not far from Brooklyn College, I have never heard it called “Brooklyn College Neighborhood,” although I have heard South Midwood, which is on the opposite side of Ocean Avenue and which abuts Brooklyn College, referred to as such.
Fiske Terrace is extremely tranquil, and has suffered from relatively few inappropriate exterior renovations over the years.
My money says it will go for ask. And if memory serves me correctly, it won’t be a record for the area south of Ditmas Park. I seem to recall several Midwood Park houses getting high prices over the last year.
All I every read on this website is that “the prices are to high” over and over and over again.
Yet they all seem to sell and sell fast and since they have contract pending it’s not that hard to figure out that they either got asking or pretty close to asking.
It’s only been on the market for 2 weeks….
So I guess it’s not to high…
Thank you neighborhood boosters. Let’s hear from those who don’t have an agenda. This price is way too high for this neighborhood.
This is techinically fiske Terrace I believe and while it seems high, I see these houses going really fast. I live in the area and the subway situation is great. A few years ago when the D train here became the B express and the Q the neighborhood just became more and more desirable. I have met a lot of the brooklyn properties agents and many of them live in the area and have for a while so I think saying all agents lie is a bit much.
i tried buying in park slope and could not get anything with any space for under 1.3 so getting a big house where no one lives under or above you, outdoor space and tons of rooms- a bargain.

The brokers, especially Tracey McLean’s Corcoran listing on East 21st Street, are really stretching it (ok, lying) when they say all their listings are in Ditmas Park. These homes, while on beautiful streets, are not “steps” to Cortelyou Road. If you’re not familiar with the neighborhood, I would seriously recommend walking around the streets of these listings so you can see that you are in fact, quite a hike from these “gentrification destinations” and you will be spending LOTS of time in your car. I moved here recently and while I love it, I am ALWAYS in my car.
