Cambridge Place in Clinton Hill is only two blocks long but it has a wonderful assortment of beautiful houses on it. One of them is this woodframe at 36 Cambridge Place. It’s got lots of original charm and has been extensively renovated in a tasteful manner. It the sellers get their asking price of $1,725,000 it would certainly be on the high end on a per square foot basis for this end of the neighborhood but we wouldn’t rule it out. We keep hearing from brokers that houses like this that don’t need any work are in high demand and short supply. And this place is still a million bucks less than if it were in Park Slope and half a million bucks less than if it were in Fort Greene. On the downside, you’d have to live around the corner from us.

  1. Top 2 floors have some weird layout issues: two bedrooms only accessible via other bedrooms; two bathrooms the same. One bathroom is the master bath but why not just have 2 doors to make it more flexible?

Personally I love the block. But crappy supermkts get me down. Some days I really jones for Tesco.

  2. How is that inconvenient?

-they are not that close and they don’t seem nice.
this area is not yet really established as a nice place to live like Park Slope or Cobble Hill and yet the prices! Zowee! you would think this was walking distance to Gramercy Park.

  3. tinarina, thanks, you have confirmed for me what I suspected, which is that this is really in the middle of nowhere. Some day it may be a nicer location with more amenities, but today it seems very inconvenient. Brooklyn life is inconvenient unless you can walk to things because driving is difficult and stores have no parking.

  4. It’s a pretty house, but I’m not feeling the promise of the outside on the inside. The renovation is beautifully done (masterful), but it doesn’t feel historic. The only original details I see are one fireplace and some flooring.

  5. For grocery stores, there’s a Met on Fulton btwn St. James and Putnam — but the Pioneer at Lafayette and Grand (across from Choice Market)is kind of weirdly awesome. Heck, there’s also an Associated on Waverly btwn Greene and Lafayette. Plus, Choice Greene for fancy stuff on Greene and Cambridge.

I love Cambridge Place. We live around the corner and so many great restaurants and cafes and things have opened in the past few years. We moved from Park Slope and were worried about missing the Key Foods at 5th and Sterling. Not so. I want this house!

  6. Boerum, there are 3 supermarkets nearby:

Met at Cambridge and Fulton (not recommended for meat or produce; not clean)

Pioneer at Grand and Lafayette (the best of the lot, IMO)

    Associated at Waverly and Washington

In addition, there’s Choice Greene at Grand and Greene for pricey cheese, meats, produce and other gourmet basics. Super-handy.

And then of course there is Choice Market for really good carry-out at Lafayette and Grand. The service and lines can be annoying, though.

I also like the health food store at Fulton and Washington for fruit, some veg, and smoothies.
