House of the Day: 143 Kent Street
Let’s face it: In general the stock of townhouses in North Brooklyn doesn’t come close to that of Brownstone Brooklyn. But if you’re an old house enthusiast with a hankering for the hipness of Greenpoint, this newish listing at 143 Kent Street may let you have your cake and eat it too. The former parish…

But if you’re an old house enthusiast with a hankering for the hipness of Greenpoint, this newish listing at 143 Kent Street may let you have your cake and eat it too. The former parish house has a grandeur and historic vibe rarely found north of Myrtle Avenue–along with some modern updates on the upper floors that add a lightness and airiness to the place. Of course, the owners know what they have and aren’t giving it away: Asking price for the 5,000-square-foot three-family is $2,650,000.

>On the plus side, Greenpoint has top rated elementary schools, very quick access to the city, low crime and a plethora of Polish food options, including bakeries that actaully bake in the back what they sell in the front and pork product shops.
How is it a quick access to the city ? Only the G train is out there. So G to connect to the L to connect to another train seems a long way to midtown unless i am missing something
xavnyc, couple of stops north to Long Island City and connections to either the 7 or the E train and one or two stops to GCT/East 50s. It’s actually pretty quick to the business areas of midtown despite the stigma of needing two trains.
dh, its getting better. Pauli gee’s for pizza, Le Gamin for cafe au lait or bistro food, Champion coffee for really excellent coffee. The american/korean place on the corner of Kent st. seems confused but the kimchee hangover stew is great. Papacitos is good for Mexican as is the Mexican lady that sells tamales raja and horchata outside from her cooler. The Thai options are more limited, as is Japanese, and for the life of me I haven’t been able to find the local fish n chips shop.
i dunno ditto – if i lived up there i’d be pretty content with the dining options on Franklin St and Greenpoint Ave
I think Mr. B’s intro reflects that he didn’t know about Greenpoint when he bought his brownstone and, regretably, ended up in Clinton Hill 😉

I am so glad the beautiful part of Greenpoint is getting some love…
I hadn’t looked at the price. Its is bonkers.

On the downside, the middle schools and high schools are outside Greenpoint and nothing to speak of, the remaining dining options require a walk or drive to Williamsburg, and it seems to have a serious dog-poop issue 9though not so much on Kent st).
This is one of the prettiest and somewhat unknown historic districts in all of Brooklyn, and very few of the houses come to market.
Beautiful house. I really like the landmarked area in Greenpoint, lots of very pretty houses.
It seems insanely overpriced, like most everything else.
