House of the Day: 900 Greene Avenue
This new listing at 900 Greene Avenue gets our renovation juices flowing. The 18-foot-wide brownstone is in pretty rough shape but there are tons of original details just calling out for some TLC. That’s why, even at $575,000, we’re not sure the asking price is low enough, especially when you consider that the house is located pretty far east in Bed Stuy. The block looks so-so, though unfortunately there’s a row of three new townhouses directly across the street that certainly detract from the historic ambience.

Sadly needs a good lot of work, though with all those charming original details it’d be worth it.
It’ll sit for awhile I imagine till somebody lowers the price.
SRO = NO NO unless it’s dirt cheap.
Another one 20-30% overpriced.
Neighborhood here is a bit rough. Was looking seriously at a nicely renovated 2 family almost a year ago for 365k just 2 blocks away (no details left). Decided to take “the night walk.” There were more people just standing around in the streets at 11:30pm on a Tuesday than there were at 1pm on a Saturday. And it wasn’t even warm out. Talk about “night life.” It was really sort of scary.

:-/ no. what detracts from historic ambience is not a row of new townhouses. it’s crackheads, hookers, and gun shots that detract.
*rob*
First of all, it’s an SRO. Although it has a new roof (probably has water damage by the looks of those unsalvageable floors) it most likely requires all new plumbing, electric and heating.
If you’re going to restore it to the level it needs to complement the quality of the remaining architectural details, it’ll cost $250,000 at least which, at this price, brings you to $825,000. I’ll sell you mine at that price, in a much better neighborhood.
Overpriced. As far as the location, it’s not “too far east” it’s too far north. Way too far.
This house now has 3 reasons why it’s priced way too high.
1) Basically needs a gut reno
2) It’s an SRO
3) Marginal location
This price is totally ridiculous.
