Even though $1.395 million is a lot of dough for Lefferts Manor we think this new listing won’t even be around to see the fireworks next week. If you’re into period perfection this place will knock your socks off. (On the flip side, if you’re not, it’ll make you gag.) It’s got the full monty: parquet floors, carved wood paneling, leaded stained glass. The 20-foot detached house sits on a 37-foot-wide lot on the neighborhood’s (arguably) best block. For $100,000 less, we think this is looking like a better buy than 68 Midwood despite the latter’s many positive attributes. Think we’ve got that right?

  1. Regarding Anon 3:09’s comments,

I love Victorian architecture and a great deal of Vict. interior design. I’m not going to deconstruct someone’s home room by room, but this is not an entirely faithful Victorian interior. I would call much of it more of a modern interpretation of a Victorian interior. I think one can love all things truly Victorian but not want to live in a museum. If I was interested in buying the house, I would be thrilled by the woodwork, floors, fireplaces, bathroom, etc, and also thrilled that they were unpainted and intact. My antiques, as well as other pieces would look great.

That doesn’t mean I have to like the dark floral wallpaper, or the black striped paper in the bathroom. I’m not that in love with most wallpapers, and would be much happier with painted walls. That’s my taste, just as the house is the current owners’ taste. To each his/her own. That doesn’t make one less hardcore about their love of a period or style.

  2. 2:37 and 3:09–One can adore this house and hate the decor. I would be happy in a place like this, but I’d strip the wallpaper, rip off the doilies and drapes, and put in some lovely modern furniture to accentuate the details. Just because I love this type of home does not mean I want to live in a doll house.

As for price, I’d bet it goes for no more than 1.3M.

  3. Yawn… Brownstoner already said that if you don’t like authentic period restoration than you are not going to be charmed by this faithful Victorian interior (which is how the house would have been decorated when it was first built). I don’t care if anyone out there likes the decor or not, but I do find it tedious that so many people who profess to love period brownstone architecture can’t stomach the interior design of that era. Guess some people are hardcore, others are just well…

By the way, the wall paper doesn’t have to be stripped. It looks to be in decent shape. The only reason it would need to be stripped is if you don’t like it. In which case, Brownstoner already told you that this is not the house for you. So put your money elsewhere.

  4. I think the midwood house is fair. A&H Realty actually price lower than the average broker, which creates interest and competition. This house should move and get close to its price. The wide lot is a big factor, it puts this house at the top in the neighborhood. The houses on this block are quite grand. The wallpaper too is actually quite Victorian and VERY fitting for a house of this style. Lofts are in Dumbo.

  5. As someone who is actively looking to purchase, I appreciate the SI listing, and any listings or discussions of other areas. I’m looking thoughout the metro area, not just Brooklyn. Brooklyn is certainly on my list, but I’m more than open to other options. This is an RE site, and Brooklyn RE needs to be looked at in the context of the greater area.
