House of the Day: A New Era In The Slope?

This North Sloper looks like a sign of the times to us. As far as we can tell, this would have been asking north of $2 million just a few months ago. Now, at $1.795 million, the location and historic integrity of the building make this pretty attractive, we think. Perhaps there’s a bit of a discount for the fact that it’s a three-family–most buyers in the North Slope these days probably want a one- or two-family. In addition to the cost the reconfigure, the listing admits that the house needs a tune-up in places. Personally, we’d start by plastering over that brick wall in the bedroom! Regardless, we suspect this will attract a buyer quite quickly at this price. It makes us wonder: If this house is $1.8 in the prime Slope, what would it be in Fort Greene?

It’s really more about the kids than the school… as long as all those kids go to the same place, that school will be deemed “good”.
Anyway, there are many good high schools in brooklyn, but few good middle schools, which is pretty consistent with the rest of the country.
Here is my question… Once the owners of Prime Slope brownstones see their offspring graduate from 321, where do these children go, especially if they continue with public education? The options, as I see it, are very limited in District 15. And it doesn’t seem that St. Ann’s, Friends, and Packer could possibly have enough spots for all the upwardly mobile/monied families busy gentrifying Brooklyn. Where do they go?
when did this become a pissing contest between fg and ps lol. anyway the house seems nicely price to sell. hell its cheaper than some houses in ph thats for sale now!!!
I was talking to 6.00 who left a link for anyone who thought the housing market was cooling down… and then his link talked about the London housing market.
Although I lived in London in 1995: I remember at the time some Londoners I met laughing at some guy who had paid 26,000 pounds for literally a closet. He figured that real estate would never go down, either. And then it went down for four straight years. Heh.
6.40, who are you talking to? Calm down buddy.
This thread’s cracking me up.
To Anon at 4.30pm, I’d like to add a line to your ode to Prospect Part:
“Oh my goodness, it is the masked bandit, the Ninja Killer… I thought they caught you years ago! Slash, chop…” 😉
What? The housing market is OK in London so it’s OK here? Did you even READ the article???
“It also helped that in August the Bank of England cut rates to 4.5%, down from 4.75%. Potential buyers had been spooked by Bank of England Governor Mervyn King’s earlier warnings that the market looked dangerously frothy. But the bank’s trim suddenly took the worry out of the rate outlook. …
Brokers say the current boomlet began last fall after the Bank of England cut rates.”
The American Fed is jacking UP rates. For the fourth straight week, mortgage rates are at a 4-year high (6.52%). And I hope no explanation is necessary as to why that directly and severely effects housing prices but it goes without saying that sellers care about selling price: buyers care about monthly payments.
Wow. The, “there is no bubble” crowd will grasp at any straws to prop up their argument.
Unless you thought that you were posting to http://www.brownstoner.co.uk?
To the parents who cant get there kids into St Annes – congratulations! Having worked around the corner for many years, I can tell you from my observation there is no greater waste of $ then St Annes unless your only goal is to get your kids into a top College (I have no idea why but St. Annes has amazing placement) –
Now I have never sat in one of the classes but judging from the multitudes of kids hanging out smoking (cigarettes and pot) all day, I would say a sizable % of the students havent either – but why should they, the school has no grades; and virtually every exchange with these ‘students’ has confirmed my opinion that attendance will turn your kid into an obnoxius little sh^t, who dresses and talks like they’re from the ghetto yet has a superiority complex that can only come from being completley and totally spoiled.
these last 2 postings are perfect examples. so bitter you all are. i’ve lived in new york for quite some time and have lived in brooklyn…back many years ago when MOST of you probably wouldn’t have even visited, much less spent millions on place. i realize all of nyc is a rat race, but this site is supposed to be devoted to those who LOVE brooklyn and the things that make it special. NOT find every opportunity to knock it and argue over inane things such as who’s park is better. all i’m trying to say.

You gotta be tough to make it on the mean streets of brooklyn. Stay in Kansas.
