House of the Day: First Rate on First Street
We’ve discussed before how difficult we think it is to predict how some of the higher-priced houses in the higher-priced nabes will sell. We’ve discussed before how difficult we think it is to predict how some of the higher-priced houses in the higher-priced nabes will sell. This lovely “British Regency with Federal Style” mansion on First Street between 8th Avenue and Prospect Park West probably falls in that category. The house was built in 1915 for the builder of this row of similar houses. What’s not to like? (Well, we could point to a couple things like the kitchen cabinets and a little overkill on the dining room walls, but this is no Columbia Heights overkill.) Point being this place is large, pristine and in the right place. If one had to quibble, the yard is a bit on the small side. Anyway, it’s a looker–the question is will there be takers at $3.295 million. It’s only been on the market for a little over a week, so it’s too soon to tell.
Property #89 [Townsley & Gay] GMAP
my comments weren’t indicating that there was anything wrong with park slope. it was in the context of the discussion that I was pointing out why I wouldn’t have thought people in finance would live in park slope or in Brooklyn for that matter. as I said, I have no problem being corrected or informed in this case because I never claimed to know who lives in Park Slope and who doesn’t especially since I don’t live there. as far as you saying “you can understand why people jumped on my comments”, I’m glad you know because I don’t. I understand its sometimes hard to interpret what people are saying when they’re typing it out but I never once said anything negative toward Park Slope. I said I didn’t know people in finance who liked brooklyn period. if anything my comment was directed toward the borough as a whole. since you were so handy with your copy and paste maybe you should have read when I said that “they don’t do borough” BOROUGH meaning queens, bk, bx… wherever. I also noticed how you strategically left out my very first response to the person who pointed out who may buy this property. let me recap for you:
“hedge fund managers? really? I just can’t imagine George Soros or the like in Brooklyn, but I see your point. I guess I never thought about artists or just people who are wealthy through employment. thanks. ”
(MAYBE YOU SHOULD READ THAT TWICE BECAUSE IT CLEARLY SAYS “REALLY”)
now that you’ve finished reading that let me further break it down for you. I also said “I see your point” conceeding his response that bankers, lawyers, etc live in park slope and indirectly standing corrected.
more so, this was all from my experience and I made that very clear so you’re totally off base with your assumptions. you, and everyone else who misunderstood what I was trying to get at. get your facts straight.
Hmm! Not the same high profile IBer I’m talking about – they don’t live on Garfield. The poster who said IBers don’t live in PS. I don’t know where he/she gets his/her info from. There are definitely more than 2 of them, methinks.
blkbuttrflie – You didn’t just say “really” before acquiescing the point. Here are some of your posts (including your final post tacitly agreeing you might be wrong) after people said IB types, lawyers etc. live in Brooklyn, including PS. I can see why people jumped on the comments.
“well, I work in finance and the executives I know ( the VERY few) who aren’t MD’s, even Associates just don’t do borough. thats the reason I asked because the people I know with money laugh at the idea of staying in Brooklyn and if they did I doubt they’ll stay all the way in Park Slope near Flatbush Ave, thats just not happening they may consider BH. I bought the other occupations because I don’t know any personal millionaire surgeons but I do know my fair share of wealthy financiers and I can’t see them living there.”
“and let me just point out that I used to work at Lehman Brothers and I can’t recall one banker or trader who lived in Brooklyn. maybe their assistants but thats about it and thats the general attitude its all about hierarchy in finance there’s no way a MD wants to live near his assistant.”
“anon 3:20, I was the one who said I worked at Lehman and I left at the beginning of last year and I’ll admit that times could have changed its definitely possible. hell, I live in bedstuy! but at the time it was certainly the case of the cheese standing alone. maybe it was because I lived in bedstuy though, maybe if I lived in BH or something they’d be more willing to admit they live in my borough but I just didn’t know anyone in my group or a few others and I was really surprised but if I’m wrong I’ll stand proudly corrected.”
anon 10:06, as the person who asked the question I beg to differ that I refused to believe anything. I simply stated that I didn’t know any personally. if I were going to assume that I knew who lived there I would have never asked in the first place. when someone pointed out who may buy a place like this I said really? well okay and pointed out why I wouldn’t have assumed otherwise.
Maybe it’s time to start really outing the IBers in Park Slope. Between their penchant for publishing every promotion and making political contributions it is straightforward to determinine their employers.
A house on our block sold recently and it took about thirty seconds to determine the bank the buyer worked for and the republicans to whom he had donated money.
Then we can settle this once and for all.
Don’t know about larger houses selling for less….propshark shows this as 6000 sq ft – but of course I can’t verify that.
As far as realtors go — I see in BKlyn Hts – many of the most expensive houses are with Carberry and who among us peons would know of him. But I’m guessing some of these little exclusive firms have the contacts.
I’m going to out the high profile IBer’s house at least, because I think it is indicative of the great things that these types of people bring to neighborhoods.
The house is on the north side of garfield place between 8th and the park. When the IBer got his facade redone, he had Adami, I believe, put gargoyles on the facade with the faces of him, his kids, his wife, his parents and, of course, his dog.
It’s the creepiest and most ostentatious display of wealth you could ask for. Man, do I wish I worked for him.
anon 9.28, you’re the first person to have even used the word “white” in this thread.
And you’re right — one person asked a question… and then repeatedly refused to believe the answer, even after numerous specific examples from people who live in the neighborhood in question. That’s not bashing, but it is stubborn.
who the hell cares?! We get it bankers live in brooklyn and they love PS, alright let it go. One person asked a question and people are getting all offended like anyone is bashing PS. It was never any secret that yuppies liked the slope now the world is a better place since the slopers have assured us that their neighborhood is chuck full of white, successful contributers to society by the neighbors of several doctors and lawyers AND some of those white people happen to be bankers!!! THANKS FOR THE CLARIFICATION
