Longtime readers might remember us posting from Berlin when we were over here for a wedding a couple of summers ago. Well, we liked it so much, we’ve relocated for a month, house-sitting a friend’s apartment in Prenzlauer Berg. We’re still going to be blogging more or less full time, but if you want to follow along with our daily photos, check out our Tumblr blog.

  1. DS – thanks so much! All look like great suggestions! That’s quite a line up at the museum – Munch, Kirchner, Picasso, Klee, Feininger, Dix, Kokoschka, and many others… And come on, what Brownstoner gal doesn’t love a good flea market. Thanks!

  2. > don’t eat too much wiener schnitzel!

When I was there, I didn’t have any German food at all. I did, however, have some great Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese food.

  3. Depends on what you’re into, jessibaby.

If you like German art from the 1900-1945 period, I highly recommend the Neue Nationalgalerie:

There is also some really nice art and antiquities in the Pergamon Museum:

If you are there on a Sunday, there are a couple of really great flea markets:

As for general wandering around, I recommend the neighborhoods of Prenzlauerberg, Kreuzberg, Mitte and Friedrichshain.

I didn’t care much for Charlottenburg in the former West. The East was much more interesting and vibrant.

  4. @11217 The birthrate of Prenzlauer Berg is a deeply-held and somewhat racist myth. In fact, there are several districts within Berlin itself that maintain higher birthrates, such as Neukölln, but because those are mostly Turks being conceived, the Germans prefer not to count them. As it is, it’s rich families from West Germany moving to Prenzlauer Berg with their kids, rather than young couples giving birth here. Don’t know where you’re getting your info about the quality of the schools — it’s rather strong, with Kitas galore.

Yes, I live in Prenzlauer Berg.

  5. Ha! Judging from the photos, I think you might even be staying in the same BUILDING I stayed (at a friends apartment).

Are you on Prenlauer Alle?? Forget the cross street but there’s a really super cute plant store on the corner and across from the Bio market.
