The corner of Sands and Gold Streets was full of new refrigerators this morning. According to one of the workers onsite, every unit at the Farragut Houses is getting a new fridge. Wonder how long they’ve had their current ones? Are Whitman and Ingersoll getting similar upgrades?

  1. No, rob, you’re generalizing again. SOME people in the projects don’t eat healthy food. Not all poor people are jonzing on McDonalds or frying chicken all day.

Considering the multitude of ethnicities in the projects, you’ve got lots of cuisines that do not necessarily promote the eating of junk food in their diets. Granted, poorer people often eat a lot of foods like rice, beans, and stews to fill them up, and make meats last longer, but they also eat a lot of greens, root vegetables, and other veggies in their diets.

I’m not going to say there aren’t a lot of poor food choices in poor communities, because there are, but people are getting educated to make better choices, ie substituting smoked turkey for fat back in cooking greens, for instance, but to say ALL projects people eat unhealthily is just wrong. Poor eating habits are often neccessitated by plain old poverty.

  2. Rob, stainless steel refrigerators come in every price range. If they had delivered stainless steel, that doesn’t mean they cost more, or less than white refrigerators, which can also cost a little, or a lot.

Why in the hell people getting a new fridge should piss you off is a bit mind boggling, as is the idea that projects people only eat junk food. Most Americans, of all income groups, eat too much junk food. Your classism is showing again.
