Fresh Fridges For Farragut
The corner of Sands and Gold Streets was full of new refrigerators this morning. According to one of the workers onsite, every unit at the Farragut Houses is getting a new fridge. Wonder how long they’ve had their current ones? Are Whitman and Ingersoll getting similar upgrades?

Interesting…I walk past Ft. Greene projects every morning and see the windows open. BTW…did anyone here happen to know there is a FARM STAND with fruits and veggies every Thursday in front of the community center at Ingersoll? It’s run by Myrtle Avenue BID and along with the fresh veggies being grown in Ft. Greene projects, it seems this might debunk the ignorance. Maybe.
Also thought the choice of the word ‘upgrade’ by brownstoner was bit misleading(purposely?). Upgrade is usually used to mean a higher end, more expensive(luxury) feature than standard by condo developers.
from city website:
Where the electrical service is sufficient to handle the additional electrical service, a MAXIMUM OF TWO air conditioners are permitted. ….The charge for additional consumption of electricity for air conditioners is $8.00 per month for disabled families, senior citizens, and residents not paying the flat rent, and $10.00 PER MONTH for non-disabled families, non-senior citizens, and residents who pay the flat rent, PER AIR CONDITIONER

lalaland is correct, this is part of a city initiative to conserve electricity. New refrigerators are far more efficient than old. It is part of the same program that is replacing stoplights with LEDs, and taxis with hybrids.
In the PJs, yes, electric is free. However you pay an add’l $7 per month for AC. Not sure if that’s per unit or overall. And MM, sorry to disagree on this one, but my source tells me not only does he run his AC in the summer, it’s so hot in the winter that he runs it then also. Why not open the windows in the winter? Well, just easier to run the AC.
“I know very few people who even try, except the truly frugal, or the super green”
not my experience. i know a lot of people, including myself, that curtail A/C usage because of $. i try to just get used to the heat. we don’t leave it running at night, or in the mornings. only afternoons when we are home and its 90 or above, or if its 80 and above and we are cooking (small apt), but in the latter situation, we try not to cook so we don’t have to use the A/C.
except when people get that shocking first bill in the summer and it has to come out of their pocket so they do try to limit AC.
if youve never seen an gas an electric bill in your entire life, there’s no way youre going to care one way or the other. i have no problem with people running their AC’s tho. who the hell wants to be uncomfortable?

I concur tiptoe, that prices have not kept up with inflation and the cost of living. But from what I can see, projects people are no better or worse than most others in curtailing A/C use in the summer. I know very few people who even try, except the truly frugal, or the super green. Not saying any of the super consumers of electricity at any income level are right to do so, only that projects people seem to be held to a standard that is not upheld by many of those looking down on them, either.

There is no such thing as “free” utilities
really? cuz when someone ELSE is paying for it, i consider it free. like if someone bought me an ice cream cone. i would consider that a free ice cream cone.
the projects i lived in in new jersey had free gas and electric (and in one development we had a free parking spot in a garage!)
2 bedroom apartment
standard appliances for the most part
free garage parking spot
free gas and electric
the total rent? roughly 35 dollars a month based on “child support” payments (dont ask)
there’s a reason people like to stay in the projects!
