The couple who bought the house in 1997 appear to have cut no corners in their gut reno of the former dilapidated 4-family brownstone; some of the choices they made in the kitchen weren’t totally up our alley but the house had a wonderfully grand and airy feel, especially on a day like Sunday with the doors open to the deck overlooking the garden. The Word on the FG House Tour [Brownstoner]
Anon 1:35, we got rid of all the various wires climbing across the rear of our building when we renovated. You just call the various utility companies and hound them. They actually have no legal right to attach to your building like that, it’s just convenient for them.
Hey, my friend in Carroll Gardens has a really nice garden. Are there details around on this “Brownstone Bklyn Garden Tour”? I’d love to tell him about to get in.
I spoke at some length to the owner at #48 – Mr. B, was that you with a camera? You look younger than I thought. Anyway, my impression was that he had no choice but to replace lots of things – he wasn’t starting from the same point as the 2nd Empire Home or S. Elliot. The floors were brand new, and I assume the old ones were not salvageable – he also mentioned that chunks of the plaster mouldings were gone …
The other notable was that his back facade was totally clean of wires, which I loved and will try to achieve with our brownstone.
I still think that the island in the middle of rear parlor kitchens really takes away the dining area.
I thought the back garden was fabulous, but then I think they’re both landscape architects …
48 So. Portland was FABULOUS!
Did you happen to catch the FSBO open house next door taking advantage of the tour’s foot traffic…$2.3M…good luck.
Nah, do unto others…
For the love of god, didn’t you at least steal some shots on a camera phone? I expect more from you brownstoner.
I thought 48 South Portland was over-done. In my opinion, it lacked the character of an older house. It had been renovated to the point that it looked brand new – especially the plaster work. I much prefer 30 South Oxford and the traditional house on Fort Greene Park.
Unfortunately indoor photos aren’t allowed
I didn’t get to go on the tour — too busy selling baked goods. Does anyone have images up on flicker?
