Built in 1889 in a style the Landmarks Preservation Commission describes as “Eclectic-Romanesque,” 149 Willow Street looks ready for takeoff with two rounded towers of stacked bay windows set off by arches, all of it rendered in a mix of metal, brick and brownstone. Designed by architect J. S. Glover, the five-story elevator building originally comprised 10 apartments of five and six rooms apiece. In 1942, the building was remodeled by Oscar I. Silverstone to turn 10 apartments into 20.

On the third floor, this particular unit would have held the apartment’s original parlor, and its appealing bay window with stained glass and fireplace still serve as focal points in what is now the unit’s great room. The decorative mantel has been modernized and a window seat hides the radiator.

The current setup shows space for lounging, dining and a desk with built-in shelving in a niche. The kitchen has been updated (likely by its interior designer owner) with white Shaker-style cabinets, a marble-topped peninsula, dishwasher and square tiles in shades of white up to the ceiling.
