This one-bedroom apartment offers an alluring brownstone view, an appealing layout and a location just steps away from the Brooklyn Heights Promenade.

It’s at 57 Montague Street, in the building dubbed The Breukelen, a nod to the Dutch colonial town. Despite the old time name, the building is a relative newcomer in the Heights, dating to 1949. For decades the corner property was a gated garden, tended by sisters Harriet H. and Frances E. White, who allowed some neighborhood children to play in the green space. The sisters grew up in the family home across the street at 2 Pierrepont Place along with their siblings, including reformer and philanthropist brother Alfred Tredway White.

After the death of the sisters, Frances in 1937 and Harriet in 1947, the green oasis was sold. The new 12-story, 128-unit building that took its place was designed by architect A. Rollin Caughney for builder Samuel Ageloff.

The streamlined pale brick building has angled bays on either side of its Montague Street entrance as well as along Pierrepont Street, and this second-floor unit is tucked into one of those bays. The apartment’s living room, dining nook and kitchen have a view through casement windows of the White family’s former brownstone.

The one-bedroom unit opens into a small foyer with the living room, dining nook and kitchen on one side and bedroom and bath on the other. If hints on how to furnish the apartment are needed, an early brochure gives some tips and shows that other than the addition of some more closet space in the bedroom, the layout of the unit hasn’t changed since construction.

The living room and dining nook have parquet floors, white walls and plenty of room for arranging a work-from-home space if needed.

The windowed galley kitchen has white cabinets, a maroon tile backsplash and a dark tile floor. While it all looks in fine shape a style upgrade might make it sing. The same can be said of the brown-tiled full bath.

There are four closets in the bedroom and an additional linen closet just outside the bath.

The building is pet friendly and has a doorman, live-in super, laundry room, fitness room, storage and bike room. There’s also a roof deck with a view of the harbor. Maintenance for this unit is $1,732 a month.

Just last year it sold for $739,612. It is back on the market at a lower price, $699,000, listed by Scott Hockens and Tracie Hamersley of Douglas Elliman. What do you think?
