This weekend brings the first open houses of spring, which arrived this week according to the calendar even if meteorological cooperation was scant. For the occasion we’ve got four houses that are move-in ready. One’s a candidate for updating, but would serve as-is for buyers who want to go that route. They’re found in Red Hook, Crown Heights, Clinton Hill and Flatlands.
First up is Crown Heights, and a circa 1896 Romanesque Revival four-story on St. Marks Avenue in the Crown Heights North Historic District. It’s got a lovely facade with a projecting curved bay and a trio of arched windows, and the interior is pretty distinguished as well, with details including six mantels, wainscoting, pocket doors, crown moldings, plaster detailing and pocket doors. Some floors are original, some have been redone. It’s all in fine shape, with renovated kitchens and baths. It’s laid out as a two-family, with a six-bedroom owner’s triplex over a garden rental.
Next stop is Red Hook, and a fairly desolate stretch of Luquer Street in the shadow of the Gowanus Expressway. An unlikely place to find a $2.7 million house, perhaps, but such is Brooklyn circa 2017. It’s a three-story with an extension on the bottom floor, and an apartment with a rear terrace on each level. The wood frame house sports a brick veneer facade and may date from before the Civil War, going by the proportions (25 feet wide!) and a hand-formed foliate ceiling medallion in one of the photos. Alas, little other detail remains, or at least it’s not visible. The listing says the house was “entirely reconstructed” in 2004. It also says it was recently renovated, though most of it looks like it dates back to the reconstruction, and is not characterized by deluxe finishes.
Over to Lafayette Avenue in Clinton Hill, for a red brick Queen Anne townhouse with a modern interior. This one was an Open House Pick last March, and sold last June for slightly under the current ask. It’s a four-story with a two-bedroom owner’s duplex and a pair of one-bedroom apartments on the upper floors. It all looks to be in top shape, and electric and mechanicals have been upgraded. Note, though, that the apartments come occupied.
The final stop is Flatlands, and a 1950s brick row house on East 54th Street. Eighteen feet wide, it’s a basic two-story that sits over a garage, with a front driveway. It’s newly renovated, with a new kitchen and new windows. There are three bedrooms (“very spacious”) above and living room, dining room, kitchen and half-bath below. It’s got a porch in front and a yard in back.
