In the “graceful original detail” department we’ve got parquet floors, lovely marble mantels, crown moldings, arched door frames, pocket shutters and the mahogany newel post and curved bannister on the central staircase.

In the updating division we’ve got a Henrybuilt kitchen at the rear of the parlor floor, modern light fixtures, and tastefully renovated bathrooms, including a master bath with a claw foot tub and marble tile.

There’s also a split central air system, new heating, and updated electrical and plumbing.

The house is less than 17 feet wide, but with the center staircase, the triple parlor feels open and airy. There’s a sweet bay in the rear with a door leading down to the garden.

It’s a one-family, with a parlor-floor kitchen in the rear. There are two large bedrooms and a full bath on each of the top two floors, with plenty of closet space and a laundry room on the uppermost floor.

The garden floor consists of a “great room,” guest room and bath — presumably these could also be used as a family room and office (or a fifth bedroom).

The backyard has the de rigueur horizontal fence, a lush lawn (at least when the photo was snapped), and a nice big shade tree.

This was a House of the Day back in 2012; someone bought it then for just over $2 million and did the renovation. It was back on the market last year at $3.995 million and then $3.595 million, at which point it entered contract. But it didn’t close, and building department records show repairs to the roof and structure in the spring of this year because of fire damage.

There’s no trace of that visible in the photos, though some cosmetic changes are apparent since the house was last for sale. Some wallpaper on the parlor floor is gone, and a dark green wall was painted white.
